The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center’s Persian Farsi school recently held an exercise for their students Nov. 7, 2024. The exercise focused on the selection, preparation and planning of a notional Forward Operating Base in Basrah, Iraq.
The exercise went beyond just language learning, explained Staff Sgt. Daniel Stone, a Military Language Instructor with DLIFLC, who led the exercise.
“This scenario immerses students in a realistic operational environment setting where all of their decisions have consequences,” Stone said, “underscoring the importance of not only knowledge of their target language but also becoming a subject matter expert in the operating areas their language is prevalent in.”
The teaching team used technology to develop interactive scenarios that had the students engaged in strategic planning and military immersion. The goal was the sharpen the student’s critical-thinking skills and give them an understanding of the operational theater.
The exercise aligned with DLIFLC’s FY25 and Beyond Strategic Plan focus areas, including Warfighting and Delivering Combat Ready Formations.
Dean of the Persian Farsi schoolhouse, Dr. Ra’ed Qasem, said, “We remain committed to expanding this initiative, driving continuous transformation in language acquisition and operational readiness.”
